Breaking Ground for Good: Supporting Toby's House from the Ground Up

          Some projects are bigger than business — and Toby's House is one of those.

The History and Mission of Toby's House — Great Falls, MT

   Toby's House Crisis Nursery began with a heartbreak that the Great Falls community never wanted to experience again. It's named in memory of October "Toby" Perez, a 2-year-old girl from Great Falls who tragically died from severe child abuse in 2011. Her story became a catalyst for change — one that inspired neighbors, parents, advocates, and professionals to build a place rooted in safety, care, and prevention.

   The nonprofit officially opened its doors in late 2020, after years of planning and collaboration among community members dedicated to creating a safe, non-judgmental refuge for families in crisis. From the beginning, Toby's House focused on preventing child abuse and neglect by providing free crisis, respite, and transitional care for children, primarily ages 0–6, with services offered without income requirements.

   What makes Toby's House unique is its drop-in model — a genuinely flexible form of care that meets people where they are. Parents and caregivers can bring their children for short stays so they can take care of urgent needs: from attending medical appointments, securing housing, stabilizing employment, or simply taking a breath when overwhelming stress hits. Because of this model, Toby's House isn't just another childcare center — it's a lifeline when families face pressure that could otherwise spiral into danger.

    Over the years, the organization has grown — not just in number but in community presence and impact. In 2022, it was named the Montana Children's Trust Fund's Nonprofit Organization of the Year, a recognition statewide for its trauma-responsive work, prevention programs, and deep community engagement.

   By 2024 and 2025, Toby's House was providing thousands of hours of safe care and supporting hundreds of families with emergency childcare, diapers, formula, clothing, and direct connections to resources. It became a hub not only for children's immediate safety but for family stabilization and strength.

   Today, Toby's House stands on the edge of an exciting new chapter — expanding from its original small building into a new, larger facility that will accommodate more children, offer age-appropriate spaces, and further its mission to be a partner to families in need. Construction is underway with support from private donors, community partners, and local volunteers, all hoping to open the new home in summer 2026 — a space literally built for families to find help, rest, and hope.

   At its heart, Toby's House is more than a service organization — it's a community safety net. It listens, meets people without judgment, and offers tangible support before crisis turns into tragedy. That's the legacy behind the name, and it's exactly why this project matters so deeply.
